Samantha Booke is a fictional character in the 2007 movie, "The Great Debaters". She is a wealthy and privileged white woman who attends fictional Wiley College in Marshall, Texas during the 1930s. Samantha decides to join the debate team and becomes an important member despite encountering criticism and backlash due to her race and gender.
Through her character, the movie explores issues of race, gender, and class during the Jim Crow era. Samantha is portrayed by actress Jurnee Smollett-Bell and was nominated for a NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in the film.
